Vincent Poon :: Skocjan Cave

On the next day we went to Skocjan Caves, the only natural monument in Slovenia listed in UNESCO.

If Postojna is famous for the stalactites and stalagmites then Skocjan is famous for its underground canyon, definitely felt like a journey to the centre of the Earth!

We gathered at the entrance and had one final brief before we started exploring the cave
Ladies and gentleman, be prepared to start the journey to the Centre of the Earth... just follow the lit-up path!
(Photos were not allowed inside. This one is from travelslovenia.org)... we walked along the lit-up path while decades ago explorers had to follow the river
Photo from oddcities.com. The tour group was quite small, so the whole journey was fairly quiet for us to experience the eerie atmosphere...

Photo from smithsonianmag.com. The highlight of the tour was the Cerkvenik Bridge, 50m from the riverbed
We returned to the surface through Tominc Cave
After our 1.5 hr journey, the grand finale (the sheer size and the view of the exit) definitely did not disappoint!
Skocjan Caves were listed in UNESCO since 1986

The height of a person compared to the size of the cave opening
Now you have the option of taking the boring but easy way out (elevator) or the harder but more scenic way of the walking trail
We took the scenic walking trail which involved crossing the canyon (and of course climbing up afterwards!)
but we were awarded with views like this!
