Vincent Poon :: Postojna Cave

Perhaps one of the most visited natural sites in Slovenia, Postojna Cave constitutes the longest subterranean system in the country, with over 20 km (12 miles) of chambers, tunnels together with millions of magnificent stalactites and stalagmites

This was also the first cave I had to take an underground train for a few kms before reaching its entry point, as you could guess the sheer size of the cave.. Definitely worth a visit if you visit Slovenia.

Postojna Cave's most beautiful stalagmite is called the Brilliant, a 5m shiny white limestone formation.

The baroque pillar, which together with the Brilliant, become the symbols of this cave
The colors of these pillars gave us clue on what minerals they were composed of. Red is iron, white is calcium
The inhabitants of the cave, the olms (human fish), can be found in the 'mini-aquarium' in the centre.
The underground river Pivka lies underneath the cave

The concert hall, which is the largest cavern and could accommodate more than 10000 people for musical performances
This concert hall is also the end of the tour where you have to wait for the train to take you back... there is a souvenir shop and a toilet while you wait
Escaped from the centre of the earth... back to reality!!
Souvenirs of the olms can be found in these shops, I guess you don't get to see them very often elsewhere.
